Why beeswax candles? The honest truth about what you're burning

Most candles sold in Australia aren't what they seem.

Paraffin candles — still the most common type — are made from petroleum by-products. When they burn, they release toxins including benzene and toluene, the same chemicals found in diesel exhaust.

Soy candles — are often marketed as "natural," but most commercial soy wax is heavily processed, and many soy candles contain a blend of soy and paraffin anyway.

Beeswax is genuinely different. It's the only candle wax that occurs completely naturally, produced by bees as they build their hive. It needs no chemical processing to burn cleanly.

What makes pure beeswax candles better

Beeswax burns hotter and more completely than other waxes, which means it produces very little soot and almost no black smoke. If you've ever noticed a black ring on the ceiling above a candle, that was paraffin soot. Beeswax candles, burned correctly, leave no such mark.

Beeswax, when paired with the correct sized wick, also burns significantly longer than paraffin or soy of the same size — so while a beeswax candle costs more upfront, it lasts longer and works out better value over time.

And then there's the scent. Pure beeswax has a subtle, warm honey fragrance that comes naturally from the wax itself — no synthetic fragrance or essential oils required. It's gentle enough for people who are sensitive to artificial scents, which is one of the reasons so many of our customers come to us after giving up on other candles.

Why "pure" matters — and what to watch for

The word "beeswax" on a label doesn't guarantee you're getting 100% beeswax. Many candles labelled as beeswax contain only a small percentage — sometimes as little as 10% — blended with paraffin or other waxes to cut costs.

At Suz E Bee Candles, every single candle is made from 100% pure Australian beeswax. No paraffin, no soy, no fillers of any kind. Suz sources the wax directly from beekeepers in NSW and cleans it by hand herself before every pour — removing impurities and ensuring a consistent, clean burn that you can see and smell the difference in.

Supporting Australian beekeepers

Buying pure Australian beeswax candles also means supporting the beekeeping industry here at home. Beeswax is a natural by-product of honey production — buying it directly from local beekeepers, as we do, keeps more money supporting the hardworking beekeepers directly.

Bees are essential to Australian agriculture. Every purchase supports them too.

Ready to try the real thing?

If you've only ever burned paraffin or soy candles, the first time you light a pure beeswax candle is a bit of a revelation. The light is warmer. The scent is softer. And they just feel different — heavier, more solid, more real.
